Before We Begin
For this lesson, we will use a standard coffee as our product, selling it in a standard size for $5 and creating additional size options.
Create Your First Modifier
- Select your product from the 'Product' tab.
- Scroll down to the 'Modifiers' section and click '+ Add New Modifier'.
- Begin by naming your modifier group, for example, 'Choose Your Size.' This is not naming the specific option (Example: Large, this comes a little later).
- Then decide whether the customer can select a single or multiple items. In this example, we will select single because we only want the customer to provide us with one size option.
- Then decide whether or not it should be required. Again, because we are doing coffee sizing, we need it to be required, which means the customer MUST select one of the options.
- It is now time to give your first modifier a name and a price. Because our coffee base price is $5, I will call this modifier small and set the price to $0.00. That is, once selected, there will be no additional cost.
- If you like, you can choose additional options by selecting '+ Add Another Option'. I will go ahead and add two more options such as Medium and Large and price the modifier $.50 and $1.00 accordingly.
- Once done, click 'Save'.
You have just finished making your first modifier set. For your convenience, modifiers will be listed at the bottom of each category.
Important to note: Modifiers names and positions are a global option. This means they will reflect in the same order and position under every product that is using them. Should you need a particular modifier to feature in a different position compared to another product, it would be best to create a whole new modifier set.
Taking a Closer Look at Step 4 and Step 5
The following will attempt to give you some ideas on when to consider the Single/Multiple and Optional/Required options.
- How many items can the customer choose?
- Single. Use this option if you only want a customer to choose one option from a list of options. For example, the size of something, or how you would like it cooked.
- Multiple. When you do not mind if a customer selects multiple items - sauces and condiments or extras such as sugar. Please keep in mind that if you select this option, you will be able to add a maximum option.
-
- Required. Use this option if you want to ensure a customer selects an option before proceeding. For example, size or how you want something cooked.
Turn a Modifier Group On and Off
When you have multiple modifier options, you can easily toggle between them by clicking on the 'Switch' tab provided. A 'greyed out' modifier name indicates that the modifier is turned off, whereas a black bolded name indicates the modifier is turned on and ready to be displayed. Please remember to 'Save'.
Turning an Individual Modifier On and Off
In some cases, a modifier group may work for 90 % of a product but not all of it. Rather than creating a new modifier group, you can choose to enable and disable individual modifiers for a product.
Example:
We have a latte that uses all of the existing Modifiers, as well as our regular coffees. We do not, however, sell an 'Extra Large' size for our latte. This is how we would approach it.
Click into the product:
- Scroll down to modifiers.
- Next to the modifier name, click the edit icon.
- From the pop-up, turn off the selected modifier by using the modifier switch next to its name
- Click 'Save'.
Once saved you will notice that the selected item has become greyed out. This means that the particular item is not available for that product.
Deleting a Modifier
Easily delete a modifier by:
- Selecting the 'Edit' option.
- Scroll down to the bottom until you see the 'Delete Modifier' option.
- Confirm the deletion when prompted.
- Remember to 'Save'.
